Papaya is the edible fruit of papaya (Carica papaya), a tree native to Mexico.

Papaya can be eaten simply fresh or dried as a snack. Its small black seeds have a slightly peppery flavor. High in fiber, it is a fruit that contains several highly vitamin antioxidants.

Several epidemiological and prospective studies have shown that high consumption of vegetables and fruit reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and other chronic diseases. The presence of antioxidants in fruits and vegetables may play a role in these protective effects. Researchers have shown in vitro and in animals that papaya juice had an antioxidant activity comparable to that of vitamin E, an antioxidant known. It is best to eat ripe papaya if you want to make the most of its antioxidant potential.
